She has over 10 years of experience working with educational programs for kids and families through active learning experiences that promote creativity and collaboration; social skills development; fostering citizenship; promoting healthy living habits among children; as well as supporting literacy. Carolina Martinez Lopez holds a PhD in Education and Latin American Studies from Northern Illinois University and a BA in Hispanic Languages and Literatures and in Early Childhood Education from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. She has worked as teacher, researcher, supervisor at early childhood education programs, consultant to schools, museums, non-profit organizations. Her experience includes work with kids at the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) where she was part of the first team that implemented bilingual education programs through the dual language immersion approach which teaches both English and Spanish to children from birth through elementary school. She was also part of an educational reform team within CPS to develop new curriculum content for bilingual education programs for public schools. As part of “Eclea”, she was the second co-artistic director of the independent theatre group that teaches kids to develop their artistic skills with bilingual performances. Carolina Martinez Lopez has worked as a teacher in both Mexico and Puerto Rico. She has taught children from preschool to 7th grade simultaneously in different public schools in Puerto Rico, Mexico and Illinois. For more than 25 years she has worked as a tutor / coach for parents / guardians of kids ages 3 through 12 yrs old. As an educator, she is committed to using active approaches for learning that promote creative play opportunities around the theme of “connecting with nature”. Carolina Martinez Lopez is currently a PhD candidate at the Education and Social Policy Program, Graduate School of Education and Social Policy at The George Washington University. At GW she is working on her PhD dissertation: "Learning Legacies: Mexican American Children's Stories of Childhood Immigration and Integration". She holds a BA in Women’s Studies, Hispanic Languages and Literatures and Early Childhood Education from Interamerican University of Puerto Rico.
